Russell Family – Monkey Puzzle Tree

Araucaria araucana, known as monkey puzzle trees they originate from Chile and Argentina.

Archibald Menzies, a botanist and naval surgeon, brought the first five monkey puzzle saplings to the UK in 1795. Archibald Menzies was a plant-collector and naval surgeon on board Captain George Vancouver’s 1791–1795 circumnavigation of the globe in Captain Cook’s former ship Discovery.

This monkey puzzle tree dominates the front garden of Wheatland Cottage.
