High Blantyre

General’s Bridge

General's BridgeGeneral’s Bridge was named after General Peter of Crossbasket House.

Situated on the High Blantyre Road to Stoney Meadow, after the entrance to Greenhall and before Crossbasket House, the bridge spans the Rotten Calder. Built of stone with an impressive archway, it can be viewed by kind permission of Intercity1251 who writes: The Rotten Calder looking rather brown, Stoneymeadow Road runs above taking you up to East Kilbride or to Blantyre the other way, Crossbasket House is down stream and if not for the sun and trees you could almost see it, looking rather run down now but still worth a visit.  You can still make out the remains of the weir, its mostly been wash away and the sluice channels for the Generator house, lots of interesting bits and pieces if you look around.

This scene has changed little today, except that there is now less vegetation which has opened up the view at the back.  General's Bridge

With thanks for the kind permission of Rhona Wilson and Richard Stenlake Publishers to publish photos from the book, “Old Blantyre“.
