Spittal Bridge – Blantyre

The Priory Bridge, also known as the Spittal Bridge spans the Rotten Calder on the A724 to the West of Blantyre.

It is, in fact, fact three bridges, which were widened to accommodate the growth in traffic. The original Bridge was of medieval structure and widened in 1844 by unemployed weavers. It was widened again in 1907 in order to accommodate the Glasgow Tram Company tramline with the Lanarkshire Tram network by adding a metal structure.

The three bridges are clearly seen in the above photograph. The bottom dark arch is the Medieval bridge, the lighter arch of the 1844 reconstruction above it.
