The Aitkenhead Slaughterhouse in the foreground with McPhee’s Piggery across John Street. You can imagine the smell between the slaughterhouse and the piggery, the droppings all the way down John Street from the beasts on their way to the slaughterhouse and from another piggery across the railway line. I cannot imagine John Street to be a nice place to live in those days.
