Listen to me well boys,
You don’t want to learn,
All you want to do boys
Is get out there and earn.

Please take some advice boys
Don’t ever go down the pit.

The pit always collects its due boys,
With bodies and limbs galore,
Don’t ever be one of its meals boys,
Don’t ever go down the pit.

The pit can be your security boys,
But a false one in every way.
The pit always gets its revenge boys,
For allowing the wealth that it gives.

It always takes its pay boys –
Don’t ever go down the pit.

Your fathers went down the pit, boys
Your fathers went down the pit.
You didn’t know your fathers boys,
Because your fathers died down the pit.

Fathers, sons, uncles, cousins are no longer here
Because they all went down the pit boys,
They all went down the pit.

Go to school and learn boys,
Use the fresh air to breathe,
Don’t let the dust clog your lungs boys,
Don’t go down the pit.

Let me watch you grow boys
Be healthy and use your life,
Enjoy your family safely boys
Don’t ever go down the pit.

The men who make money from coal boys,
Who live in big houses and count
The money that’s made from coal boys,
They don’t go down the pit.

Why are they counting their wealth boys,
While you all do down the pit?
It’s called education and knowledge boys,
They don’t go down the pit,
They use it to keep the place going, boys
They don’t go down the pit.

Use your brains and challenge them boys,
Get schooling and learn what you can,
Then maybe the need for a living boys,
Will not come from inside the pit.

Then you’ll be father to your children, boys
And husbands to your wives,
And live a full life to old age boys,
If you don’t go down the pit.

Please, boys, don’t go down the pit.
