Victoria Street

Next to Calder Street, Secondary School was Victoria Street, which ran from Glasgow Road, south to Main Street High Blantyre.

Victoria Street, formerly called the ‘Clay Road’, was never a main thoroughfare and nothing of any significance was ever built on it. It had a funny ending to it when it finished at the Main Street in High Blantyre. It narrowed down to a passage way not even wide enough for a cart to pass through, only wide enough at its widest point to let 2 pedestrians shoulder to shoulder pass.

Immediately on the left after Calder Street, there was a Council Playground which was very popular by both Calder Street and nearby Auchinraith School pupils.

From here to the Main Street in High Blantyre, all the rest of Victoria Street is taken up by a Council Scheme known locally as the ‘Crescents.’ The scheme has gone through at least 3 types of renovations over the past 70 odd years, but they are still standing.

The Health Centre has been extended from Calder Street along Victoria Street and past the Health Centre is a Playing Field belonging to the Calderside Academy on Calder Street. This used to be an open field where the farmer from Stonefield Farm allowed his cows to graze. This is now only used for the outside activities associated with the Academy.

Witches Hat is a stock photo.
