Miners Welfare Committee
Blantyre Miners Welfare Society & Social Club
The Welfare Institute was established in Blantyre in 1928 with the social club being opened in 1958, the Bowling Club in 1964 and most recently, the Resource Centre in 2008.
The original Miners Welfare was partly funded by Andra McInulty and the Auchinraith Silver Band.
John Cornfield wrote: All of my family who have lived since the welfare opened all on every side have used this place. My mam and dad had their Wedding Reception in what is now the Resource Centre. We also had my mam and dads funeral reception here. For me, a big club with a big place in my heart . Long may it prosper.

Hi,
What a great joy, looking at photos of the Old Blantyre to see my Grandpa – Robert Scott – 104 Victoria Street, Blantyre.
Seated last on the right hand side.
We came to Australia in 1958, so I never saw him again after that.
My brother John continued the family tradition of caring for his fellow workers, Trade Union Secretary and finally A Federal Member of Parliament for the Australian Labor Party.
He has just published his Memoir – “Glasgow Road to Canberra” He will be delighted that his Grandpa is on your web page.
Thank you for brightening my day all the way to Adelaide, South Australia.
Regards,
Mary (Scott) Sitters
Margaret Stewart: My wedding reception was held here in 1969.
Carole Marie Deplacido: My wee work place.
Annie Murdoch Anderson Black: Omg the memories, I wish I could just be transported there, thank you for your continual updates x
