Bardykes Colliery 1874 – 1962

Bardykes Colliery 1874 - 1962Bardykes ‘Spittal’ Colliery, which was built on the site of an infectious disease hospital is situated halfway between Blantyre & Cambuslang.

I have heard many reasons why it was nicknamed ‘The Spittal’, one of which was because of the fine dust which made the miners spit a lot to clear their throat.

My Dad, Wullie Sim, worked here for many years.
