 Calderglen – Blantyre

Calderglen
Calderglen was one of the Blantyre mansion houses, which managed to survive after its heritor residents (including John Richard Cochrane in the late 1880s) it was compulsorily purchased by the Coal Board as the plan was, I believe, to have opencast mining there.

The family were very sad to have to move out.  As it happened, the Coal Board changed their minds eventually, and re-sold the house. By the 1950’s it was opened by a greyhound racing company, later being taken over as the Calderglen Nursing Home.

A Gift From Blantyre

1917 Ambulance

During World War 1, in a response from an appeal by the British Red Cross for donations to fund ambulances, a Committee of influential ladies, including Miss Moore of Greenhall, Miss Jackson of Bardykes, Miss Bannatyne of Milheugh and Miss Cochrane of Calderglen and other ladies from the Parish, worked tirelessly to fund the ambulance. A sum in excess of £500 was raised through various means, which ably covered the cost of £450 for the new ambulance.

And on Saturday 1st May 1915 a brand-new ambulance was presented to the Blantyre Branch of the British Red Cross and proudly toured around various points in the Parish, including here pictured at Calderglen House.

Terry Hughes says, “In WW1 The Red Cross society through The Times newspaper ran an appeal in 1914 for donations for ambulances. 512 were supplied to Allied Forces. I think this could be one of them.

I found the date to be 1915 when this Blantyre Ambulance was photographed at Calderglen. The Ambulance is a Crossley 25/30.”
