Wages Office
Former Counting House, Blantyre Mills
This view shows the former counting-house of the mills, also known as the Wages Office, with its external turnpike stair. Such stairs became popular in the early 1900’s, when this building was built and was originally attached to one of the mills.
The counting house was the place where the business of the mills was conducted, customers and suppliers interviewed, and wages counted out.
An earlier image of the counting house and other works buildings viewed from Bothwell, you can just see the ragged edge on the right of the building where it was once attached. Shuttle Row in the background. |
