Greenhall House and Estate

The Greenhall Estate consisted of 332 acres between Stoneymeadow Road and the Rotten Calder. And incorporated Greenhall Coach house, Greenhall Farm, Greenhall House and Greenhall Lodge.

Lieutenant Colonel John Wardrope Moore, born 1862 at Greenhall House, which was constructed by one of his forefathers c1760, was one of the heritors of the Parish of Blantyre.

Landowners were frequently involved in local decision-making, as is testified by the names of the various Blantyre heritors turning up at meetings for town improvement schemes. J. Wardrope Moore of Greenhall House (above), was often the chair of such meetings and also donated the horse trough that is set into the graveyard wall. The mansion was still standing in the 1960’s but since has been demolished.

The Moore family were also the proprietors of Greenhall Brick Works which was up the Chain Link Road adjacent to the General’s Bridge on Stoneymeadow Road. The track ran up through the woods along a high bank into a large field where the kiln was built. Apparently, remains of the kiln can still be seen.

Latterly, Greenhall was the UK Head Office of the old “English Electric Company”.
