Priory Pit

Priory PitWilliam Baird’s Priory Pit was opened in 1876, the Priory Pit (Bothwell Castle Nos. 3 & 4) also being owned by the Company and the rows (Priory Rows) were built about the same time.

There’s nothing much left of Blantyre’s mining heritage nowadays, but back in the middle of the 20th century it was a thriving industry.

Here are a few pictures from our archive from that period.
