Annfield Terrace

Glasgow Road looking EastAfter Hastie’s Farm, on the corner of Victoria Street and Glasgow Road was the start of a tenement type building called Annfield Terrace, seen here on the right, which continued up the Glasgow Road. On the corner of this tenement building was a grocery store, Gibson’s shop grocery & provisions which was very popular with the Ness’s School pupils across the road, for their sweets. Mr. Gibson used to wear a long white coat.

When this tenement was demolished, the vacant land was cleared, and this became an open market on a Tuesday where you could buy almost everything from clothes, fruit and vegetables to even getting your ears pierced. Pictured here is Hastie’s Farm on the right and Ness’s Primary School across Victoria Street. Ness's School Side View

This was the start of the Toll Brae, where Heavy Horses were used to pull carts up the brae for a toll. The Toll office was opposite Ness’s School, and the horses were stabled in John Street.

Mary Summers: Is that the public toilets the wee building on the left.

Audrey Morrison: The road looked so much better then.

Mary Wood: I remember going into Gibson’s… I thought it was a wee sweetie shop… You got your sweeties in a wee paper poke… And, who I assumed was Mr. Gibson wore a either a white apron or coat…

Helen Dyer: Mary, I remember those toilets.. sometimes had to run and glad they were there.. I took my friends daughter to the market to get her ears pierced and she got up and ran away after the woman did the first ear. I had to chasing her through the market to bring her back. She didn’t get the other one done… lol it was so funny.

Karen Feelie: A can remember a wee market on the ground where the home was a was a wee lassie then and that is where a got my ears pierced.

Richard Rankin: Can mind the market at front of Hastie’s especially the toffee apples hanging on the top bar of the sweetie stall.

Carolyn Patterson: I can remember getting off the school bus to go to the markets that were there for some time.
